A Texas jury sentenced Infowars' Alex Jones to pay $49.3 million in total damages to the parents of a first-grader on Friday.

The first-grader was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in 2012.

The conspiracy theorist claimed incorrectly that the shooting was staged by the government to strengthen gun control legislation in the United States.

The amount is less than the $150 million requested by Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis.

Jesse Lewis, Neil and Scarlett's 6-year-old son, was one of the 20 children and six teachers killed in the bloodiest school massacre in American history.

The trial marks the first time Jones has been held financially responsible for spreading false information about the 2012 Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting.

Jones described the $4.1 million in compensatory damages awarded to Heslin and Lewis by the jury as a huge victory.

However, in the final phase of the two-week trial, the same Austin jury returned and imposed an additional $45.2 million in punitive damages.

Jones testified last week that any award in excess of $2 million would destroy us.
